QUICK HITS

Weekly Wrap Up
  1. 🚔Builders back tougher standards to squeeze out organised crime. Construction industry groups are pushing for mandatory background checks and fitness for tender rules in building contracts. They reckon it’s the best way to keep bikies and underworld types off sites. The move follows a CFMEU administrator’s call for beefed-up integrity standards across the industry.

  2. 📈East-coast construction surges with new mixed-use projects. August data shows a spike in activity across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. In Sydney, big-ticket jobs like the $105 million Elizabeth Street build and a $99.6 million hotel revamp at Warwick Farm are pushing mixed-use development. Melbourne’s $100 million Bentleigh East build-to-rent scheme and major projects in SE Queensland also show demand shifting toward integrated lifestyle precincts. More builds means more jobs!

  3. 😇Tradies team up to give little Ruben a backyard miracle
Local tradies rolled up their sleeves and transformed four-year-old Ruben Ashlin’s backyard into an accessible play space after he was diagnosed with the rare hereditary spastic paraplegia. The $50,000 project included concrete paths, rubber matting, and landscaping so Ruben can scoot around safely, play independently, and actually enjoy being outside without mum worrying. We tip our hats to you, boys!

THE FEATURE

VIC Wages Theft Laws Get a Shake-Up
Here’s what it means for trades on the ground

Victoria’s Parliament has passed the Wage Theft Amendment Bill 2025. It scrubs Victoria’s own wage theft laws because the Commonwealth has already taken over that role since January 1 2025 under the Fair Work Act. That means if you get underpaid on wages or entitlements the new federal laws are handling it.

The Bill also renames Wage Inspectorate Victoria to Workforce Inspectorate Victoria and gives it a new job. It will take tips or complaints about dodgy behaviour on public build sites and pass them on to the right investigators. This is all part of following the first recommendation of the Wilson review into misconduct in the Victorian construction scene.

For tradies this means there is now a one stop shop within the inspectorate where you can flag poor treatment or payment issues on government funded jobs and know your concerns will be referred to the proper agency.
